The scientific name is the Blue Whale Balaenoptera musculus . The common name comes from the Norwegian minke ror, 'tube or slot' and qual, 'whale', and refers to the beard they have these gigantic creatures (they belong to the suborder of baleen whales called Mysticeti ).
The Blue Whale is the largest animal on the planet and the greatest that ever lived in water or on land. It can grow to 30 feet long and weigh over 100 tons, although there have been examples of 190 tons and more than 33 meters in length. The average measurements are 23.4 meters and 22.6 meters females as males larger fish live longer and did not survive the hunt by the whaling fleets.
The Blue Whale's body is long and thin, can have a blue back-blue or gray (hence the common name) and a yellow or gray belly. There are three sub species confirmed, plus an unconfirmed. Like other baleen whales, feeds small crustaceans (krill) and small fish that filter the water using baleen or "whale." One of the features of this Cetacean is that it has a small dorsal fin, close to the tail fin, which is evidenced by plunging the animal.
Who would want to harm these animals?
